Everton’s Ben Godfrey left a nasty mark on Arsenal rival Takehiro Tomiyasu’s face but controversially escaped punishment for a stomp that’ssparked widespread debate.

Tomiyasu was lying on the turf near the touchline during Tuesday’s (AEDT) Premier League clash and an off-balance Godfrey landed on his face.

The incident was reviewed by VAR there was a quick dismissal with Godfrey not even receiving a yellow.

While many agreed the incident was accidental, plenty were in the other camp and left in disbelief Godfrey had escaped a red card.

Carragher added: “He’s a very lucky boy.”

Co-commentator Alan Smith said during the coverage: “… that did not look accidental. That was something he could have easily avoided.”
