Sam Kerr; Matildas captain scores twice for Chelsea in the Champions League

Matildas captain Sam Kerr went close to scoring one of the fastest hat-tricks in football but had to settle for a double in Chelsea’s 7-0 Champions League monstering of Swiss champions Servette in Switzerland.

Kerr, who has been nominated for the BBC Women’s Footballer of the Year, also set up two goals as the Blues raced to a six-goal lead by halftime.

She scored Chelsea’s third and fourth goals and declared it was a night she wouldn’t forget.

“It’s a special night. This is my first time coming here and it was very special. It will be a night most of us won’t forget for many reasons,” Kerr said post-match.

“It was a good performance, good crowd and Maren (Mjelde) is back.

“It’s nice as a player to walk off the pitch knowing you did everything possible to win the game and tonight we can do that. There’s only positives we can take from it and hopefully we can take that into the weekend.”

Chelsea manager Emma Hayes said her team, which now sits on top of their Champions League pool, could have won by more.

“The details in the pass, the movement, the finishes and execution in the actions … It could have been 7-0 at halftime. We missed chances,” she said

“Credit to the players. They decided they wanted to go up a level. It is my job to put the challenge to them. I thought we were outstanding.”

Kerr was taken off after 66 minutes as Chelsea rested a host of their top players with an eye on the bigger prize.

Cristiano Ronaldo petty Instagram act after Lionel Messi Ballon d’Or triumph

How petty can Cristiano Ronaldo be?

After Argentina’s Lionel Messi was awarded the prestigious Ballon d’Or on Wednesday AEDT, Ronaldo has reportedly liked a social media post that argued Messi should not have won the accolade.

Ronaldo was absent from the ceremony in Paris for the coveted award, which was claimed by his long-term rival Messi for a record-extending seventh time.

The 34-year-old was a deserving winner, having finished his final season with Barcelona in fine form and winning his first international trophy with Argentina at the Copa America earlier this year.

Messi now has seven Ballon d’Or gongs to his name — two more than Ronaldo, who finished sixth in this year’s voting.

Later on Wednesday, a lengthy social media post from “@cr7.the_legendario” argued that Ronaldo should have ranked higher than sixth, TalkSportreported.

The caption, written in Portuguese, roughly translated to: “43 goals in the year, six goals in five games in this Champions League, all decisive and a guy who, regardless of age, continues to work miracles and is the guy who most impresses the world most often.

“They still put the guy in sixth … Do you really think that five guys did more than him in the year? Never.

“He could fight for this award calmly and the fight would be good with Lewandowski, who in individual numbers was incredible and Bayern had a better season than Juventus and has been having a calmer season than United. But at the national selection level for example, Cristiano was much better.

“And who does the prize go to? For Messi, who only won the Copa del Rey with Barcelona, he hasn’t scored a goal against Real Madrid since when Cristiano left (in 2018), disappeared in the big games of the season.

“He won the Copa America that was supposed to be every four years and they now do practically every year. He didn’t score in the final or in the semi-final. And he’s been having a weak season with Paris Saint-Germain individually.

“For Cristiano to win this prize he has to be 300 per cent unquestionable. It’s no use scoring the most beautiful bicycle kick of the year, being champion of everything by club, top scorer of everything and scoring a hat-trick in the World Cup, they still provide a way to take his prize.

“With Messi, it’s the other way around. He can do a low-key season, way below, they’ll always find a way to favour him and give him the prize.

“Theft. Dirt. Shame. Simply regrettable.

“Who saw, saw. Anyone who is smart enough knows who the real deserving ones are.

“Receiving awards without earning it is false happiness, without pride

“Regardless of these awards, the CR7 will always be the best in history!”

Ronaldo not only liked the post, but commented “facts” with a thumbs up and eyes emoji.

The “@cr7.the_legendario” account appears to have since been deleted.

Earlier, the Portugal star accused one of the Ballon d’Or organisers of spreading lies about him in a blistering social media post.

Pascal Ferre, the editor-in-chief of France Football — the magazine that runs the Ballon d’Or — recently told the New York Times that Ronaldo was purely motivated by the desire to finish his career with more individual accolades than Messi.

But Ronaldo hit back on Monday, accusing Ferre of an act of “absolute disrespect”.

“Today’s outcome explains why Pascal Ferre’s statements last week, when he said that I confided in him that my only ambition was to finish my career with more Ballon d’Ors than Lionel Messi,” he wrote on Instagram.

“Pascal Ferre lied, he used my name to promote himself and to promote the publication he works for.

“It is unacceptable that the person responsible for awarding such a prestigious prize could lie in this way, in absolute disrespect for someone who has always respected France Football and the Ballon d’Or.

“And he lied again today, justifying my absence from the Gala with an alleged quarantine that has no reason to exist.”

Liverpool have heaped pressure on Rafael Benitez after thumping Everton for four goals in the Merseyside derby.

Former Liverpool manager Benitez is under severe pressure having not won a game since the end of September and gone on a run of two draws and six losses in the eight games since.

Liverpool mercilessly raced into an early lead inside 20 minutes after first Jordan Henderson and then Mohamed Salah found the net.

Demarai Gray produced a glimmer of hope before half time with a well-taken finish as Everton pressed home for an equaliser in the second 45 minutes.

However, a ghastly error from Toffees captain Seamus Colman allowed Salah to grab his second of the game before Diogo Jota added a fourth with 10 minutes to go.

Chelsea topple Watford to stay top | 01:28

It was the fourth consecutive game where Liverpool scored four as they took their goal total to 43 for the season, the highest of any in Europe’s top five leagues.

But the Reds remain in third place, after both Chelsea and Manchester City held on to 2-1 wins away to Watford and Aston Villa respectfully.

The Blues were made to go back to the dressing room midway through the first half after players alerted officials to a medical emergency in the crowd, with the fan being stabilised before being taken to hospital.

Once they came back on, Mason Mount opened the scoring just before the half-hour mark only for Emmauel Bonaverture to equalise just before the break.

Chelsea struggled against former boss Claudio Ranieri before Hakim Ziyech managed to come up with the winner and keep the Blues top of three.

In the other game involving the Premier League title protagonists, Manchester City inflicted a first defeat of his Aston Villa career on Steve Gerrard, who started life in the midlands with back-to-back victories.

It took two fantastic goals to do it though, with centre back Ruben Dias firing in a long-range strike to give Pep Guardiola’s side the lead before Bernardo Silva thumped home a stunning volley in a goal of the season contender.

Ollie Watkins squeezed home an excellent finish just after the half-time break but Villa were unable to build upon it as Jack Grealish came on for the final few minutes against the side he captained and left for a British transfer record a few months ago.

West Ham are at risk of dropping out of the top four on Friday morning following a 1-1 draw with Brighton at the London Stadium.

Tomas Soucek gave the Hammers the lead after just five minutes but Neal Maupay scored a stunning overhead kick in the 90th minute to snatch a point.

Leicester’s tough season continued in a 2-2 draw with Southampton with the Saints twice taking the lead through Jan Bednarek and Che Adams but were twice pegged back by Jonny Evans and James Maddison.

In the other game of the night, Wolves drew 0-0 at home to relegation-threatened Burnley.
