Paul Pogba red card tackle, video, reaction, Cristiano Ronaldo

Paul Pogba was on the pitch for all of 15 minutes before a lunging tackle saw him red carded in Liverpool’s 5-0 drubbing of Manchester United at Old Trafford.

The star midfielder was brought on at half time with the Red Devils already trailing by four goals following a disastrous first 45 minutes.

Pogba only made United’s situation more dire as he lunged in on Naby Keita with his studs up to be shown a straight red card — after a VAR review — in the 59th minute.

Keita was stretchered from the field.

Manchester United legend Gary Neville said on Sky Sports: “I think it is a red. I think we all recognise that that is the tackle which has to go.

“There were signs of indiscipline before the break. But they have followed it up in the second half. There have been three tackles which haven’t been great.

“This is as bad as it gets. It is the nature of the performance. They have capitulated.”

Meanwhile, The Telegraph’s Keith Hackett wrote: “Pogba’s tackle on Naby Keita was reckless, dangerous and entirely deserving of a red card. He was off his feet, out of control and endangered the safety of his opponent.

“It was undeniably a red card – most observers on television would have come to that conclusion straight away, but referee Anthony Taylor – who had a very strong game – had only one view and decided to issue a yellow, believing that the challenge was simply reckless, and nothing more.”

Meanwhile, United could have been reduced to nine men after Cristiano Ronaldo controversially avoided a red card after he appeared to kick out at Curtis Jones.

Jones won the ball and was on the ground when a clearly frustrated Ronaldo forcefully kicked out, albeit at the ball that was resting under the Liverpool player’s leg.

His actions led to a scuffle with Liverpool players furious at the star who was only awarded a yellow card.
