Newcastle sacks manager Steve Bruce, Saudi takeover, decision made, replacement

Newcastle has sacked manager Steve Bruce.

The club confirmed on Wednesday night (AEDT) it had parted ways with Bruce “by mutual consent” but multiple outlets reported the club’s new Saudi owners make the call.

Bruce has been in charge since July 2019 when he replaced Rafael Benitez and has hardly been a popular figure ever since, with his sacking appearing imminent for some time.

Monday (AEDT)’s 3-2 loss to Tottenham at home, the first since the Saudi Public Investment Fund made its $AU560 million purchase from the widely-disliked Mike Ashley, was Bruce’s 1000th as a manager.

Fans chanted the 60-year-old would be “sacked in the morning” during the loss and a $AU12.8 million buyout wasn’t enough to stop Newcastle from making the move.

Bruce’s assistant Graeme Jones takes over in a caretaker role.

“I am grateful to everyone connected with Newcastle United for the opportunity to manage this unique football club,” Bruce said.

“I would like to thank my coaching team, the players and the support staff in particular for all their hard work. There have been highs and lows, but they have given everything even in difficult moments and should be proud of their efforts.

“This is a club with incredible support, and I hope the new owners can take it forward to where we all want it to be. I wish everyone the very best of luck for the rest of this season and beyond.”

Newcastle sits second-last on the Premier League table, without a win through eight matches and with just three draws, three points away from safety and despite the Saudi buyout will need major changes to avoid the relegation battle.
