Manchester United’s woeful performances under coach Ole Gunnar Solskjaer have continued into Thursday morning’s Champions League clash with Atalanta, with the Premier League giants conceding twice in the opening half an hour.

First it was Mario Pasalic poking home a low cross from close range to hand the Italian visitors the opener in the 15th minute. Then Atalanta centre-back Merih Demiral found space between defenders Luke Shaw and Harry Maguire on a corner and could hardly miss a simple header to double the advantage in the 28th minute.

Cristiano Ronaldo was left furious at the second goal, and cut a frustrated figure throughout the half as he remonstrated at the actions of his teammates.

It means United have failed to keep a clean sheet in 12 consecutive home games in all competitions, their longest run since 1964 – and conceding a host of poor goals in that time.

And having lost to Young Boys in their first Champions League games, it leaves Solskjaer’s side in dire straits in the group stage – and his job under increasing doubt.

Experts were quick to criticise United’s poor first-half performance, while fans at Old Trafford even booed the players at the halftime whistle in an extremely rare act.
