Ange Postecoglou shot at critics after Motherwell win

Ange Postecoglou was quick to take a shot at his critics on Saturday after Celtic capitalised on a Rangers slip-up with a 2-0 win at Motherwell.

The Hoops were six points behind their bitter rivals in the Scottish Premiership but Rangers drew 1-1 at home to Hearts, dropping two points in the process.

Postecoglou — under pressure after a slow start in Glasgow — was asked after beating Motherwell if he was pleased to have closed the gap after many wrote off his side’s premiership chances.

“I thought the Premiership was over mate, so I’m not looking at the table any more,” he responded.

Celtic fans loudly celebrated news of a late Hearts equaliser but Postecoglou said that Rangers’ results have “zero significance”.

“We are just doing our own thing … What’s more important to us is that we get more belief into the team,” he said.

He added: “It’s one thing to get a victory here but to control the game should give the boys real belief and confidence moving forward.

“We have some big games coming up, starting on Tuesday (against Ferencvaros). The main thing for us is to keep our heads down and run our own race. When you do that and you keep improving then you see where you end up.”

Portuguese winger Jota fired Postecoglou’s men in front early on from Tom Rogic’s pass.

David Turnbull then doubled the visitors’ advantage on his return to Fir Park with a sensational strike from long-range.

Dundee United remain above Celtic in third after they thrashed Hibernian 3-0 at Easter Road.

Celtic’s next match is at home on Wednesday (1.30am AEDT) in the Europa League against Ferencvaros.
