The Newcastle Jets are no stranger to signing marquee English stars, and they’ve reportedly launched an audacious bid to bring an Arsenal legend down under.

Jack Wilshere, who spent a decade at Arsenal after breaking into the first team at just 16, is being targeted by the A-League squad as they undergo a massive rebuild following a second-bottom finish last campaign.

According to FTBL.com.au, the Jets have held discussions with Wilshere’s agent Neil Fewings to bring the 34-cap England international to Australia as the club’s marquee player.

The report states Wilshere has also been contacted by League One side Wigan Athletic, as well as a Middle East club.

Wilshere made 198 appearances for Arsenal, earning their player of the season award in 2010-11, and is still just 29 years old. He also featured for Bolton Wanderers, Bournemouth and West Ham in the Premier League.

But struggles with injury throughout his career have left him without a club since featuring for Bournemouth in the Championship in the second half of last season.

He trained with a second-division Italian side in the off-season, but failed to seal a contract. But after opening up on his career struggles in a revealing interview with The Athletic, former Arsenal teammate and now-coach Mikel Arteta reached out to Wilshere with an offer for him to train with the Gunners as he searches for a new club, saying the ‘door is always open’.

Since then, Arteta has said: “We are in conversations with Jack to understand as well what he needs, what he’s looking for. He’s a person and a player who has huge admiration from everyone. We are willing to help him as much as we can. He knows that.”

Under new coach Arthur Papas, a former assistant of Ange Postecoglou during their remarkable title-winning Yokohama F. Marinos stint, the Jets have completely revamped the squad.

They have made 11 permanent signings plus two loan signings, releasing five players in addition to a number of players whose contracts expired following last season.

The list of arrivals includes a number of players from around the world – Daniel Penha of Brazil, Cameroon international Olivier Boumal, and Georgian international Beka Mikeltadze.

Wilshere would undoubtedly be the cherry on top of a remarkable transfer window, as the ex-Premier League star would follow in the footsteps of English legend Emile Heskey who played for the Jets from 2012 to 2014.
