David Beckham’s son Romeo impresses on professional football debut

Inter Miami coach Phil Neville believes David Beckham’s son Romeo has the potential to forge a career in professional football following his debut in Florida.

Romeo Beckham played in his first professional game on Monday (AEST) after starting for Inter Miami’s sister team Fort Lauderdale CF.

The 19-year-old played 79 minutes in a 2-2 draw with South Georgia Tormenta FC and impressed Inter Miami boss Neville despite having only 19 touches in the match.

“I thought he did really well,” said Neville.

“I think the measure of his performance was that he was only planned to play 45 minutes, and he played nearly 80 minutes because he is a boy that is hungry.

“He has got a lot of pressure and expectations on his shoulders, but what he has got is he has got his feet firmly on the ground.

“He knows he has got a lot of development to do, and he has got all the right attributes, character, determination, good person, to have a really good opportunity of making it in professional football.”

Romeo joined Fort Lauderdale CF’s roster earlier this month in a low-key move that was made without an official announcement.

He had been training with the team and occasionally Inter Miami prior to that. Neville said that former Manchester United and England teammate David Beckham had instructed him to take a tough line on his son.

“The first thing that David said to me was, ‘You have got to be harder on him than anyone else’,” said Neville.

“He has got to work harder than anyone else to get into that team because there will be questions, there will be expectations on his shoulders.”

Neville’s own son Harvey has also played for Fort Lauderdale this season, making 15 appearances.

“He knows when he is in this football club he is no different than any other player, and it is the same with Romeo,” Neville said.

FA Cup final Chelsea vs Arsenal result: Sam Kerr goals, reaction

Chelsea’s women completed a treble of domestic trophies from the 2020/21 season as Aussie superstar Sam Kerr scored twice to beat Arsenal 3-0 in front of more than 40,000 fans at Wembley.

Fran Kirby gave the Blues a third-minute lead and Chelsea dominated throughout, squandering a number of chances before Kerr struck twice in the second half.

The victory completes the treble for Emma Hayes’ side, having won last season’s Women’s Super League (WSL) title and the League Cup, as well as reaching the Champions League final for the first time.

“To think we are treble winners, it is an amazing achievement,” said Hayes. “You can’t ask any more from the players and I am extremely proud of them, the staff and the club.

“We have built this team over a long period of time and I think today we showed why we are champions.”

Arsenal lead Chelsea by a point at the top of the WSL this season after beating them at the Emirates on the opening weekend of the season.

But the Gunners were always chasing the game from the moment Kerr played in Kirby to fire low past goalkeeper Manuela Zinsberger from the edge of the penalty area.

Kerr doubled Chelsea’s advantage with a ruthless finish just before the hour mark and rounded off the scoring in style with a dinked finish over the advancing Zinsberger.

“We kind of went in as underdogs so we had a point to prove and we are buzzing,” said Australian international Kerr.

“I’m paid to score goals but our defence was amazing and it was a team effort – I can’t wait to party!”

Tom Rogic goal video, Celtic defeat Dundee United, Rangers lead, highlights, news, Ange Postecoglou

Socceroos star Tom Rogic scored an incredible solo goal as Celtic cut the gap to Scottish Premiership leaders Rangers to four points with an emphatic 3-0 win over Dundee United.

David Turnbull also scored an outstanding goal in a one-sided first half and Ange Postecoglou’s only frustration would be that his side did not further boost their goal difference.

Midfielder Rogic opened the scoring in the 19th minute, gliding through one challenge after an excellent first touch, dribbling in between two United players on the edge of the box and curling the ball around Charlie Mulgrew and inside Benjamin Siegrist’s far post.

“Brilliant,” Postecoglou said of Rogic’s 27th goal for Celtic, a sure-fire goal of the season contender.

“… he’s one of these special footballers. When the ball goes to him, I think everyone just stops to see what he’s going to do because if you’re looking down at your phone or taking a drink, you want to stop everything you’re doing.

“And it’s not just his technique. He’s a strong player, hard to knock off the ball.

“But I’ve always enjoyed coaching Tommy. I had him for a number of years with the national team and, even as a manager, I get excited when he’s out there playing his football.

“Tommy is one of those guys I take great pride in working with and seeing him develop.”

Midfielder Turnbull missed two good chances, the second after a brilliant one-touch move, before finding the net five minutes before half time.

Callum McGregor spotted his run, lofted a pass, and the former Motherwell midfielder flicked the ball over Siegrist and knocked it home from close range.

Celtic were not as dominant after the break but forward Kyogo Furuhashi was denied several times and United could not force their way back into the game.

Any lingering doubt was removed when Celtic’s substitutes combined in the 81st minute.

Liel Abada cushioned Nir Bitton’s diagonal into the path of Liam Scales and the left-back produced a measured first-time finish from 18 yards via a deflection off Ryan Edwards.

Celtic manager Postecoglou said he was pleased with the consistency shown by his team, who now have 35 points after 16 matches, four behind champions Rangers.

“It was really solid from start to end,” he told the BBC.

“We didn’t let Dundee United get any respite at any time. We could have got more goals, but overall a real solid performance.

“What we’re trying to be and want to be is better every week. We’ve been consistent for quite a while now, home and away, and that level of performance has to stay.

“Tom Rogic has let himself down a bit this season with his finishing, but he did that today.”
