Australia defeated by Japan, Socceroos star Ajdin Hrustic goal, video, highlights, social reaction

It was the penalty that was overturned, which turned into a wondrous strike from a free kick and so nearly proved the crucial point for Graham Arnold’s Socceroos away in Japan.

After a lacklustre opening half, a lovely Martin Boyle cut back to the edge of the centre square saw Ajdin Hrustic brought down in the 68th minute.

Initially there was confusion as to whether Hidemasa Morita brought down Hrustic inside the box.

After a penalty was awarded, the VAR however intervened and overturned the onfield decision.

“If they’re going to make a line ball decision, you want to be guaranteed that the video analysis is accurate,” respected expert caller Andy Harper said in commentary for Channel 10.

“I don’t know how you get an accurate reading out of that to be brutally frank. Nevertheless there still remains a chance for the Socceroos.”

And chance there was, as Hrustic scored a goal to remember as he slammed the ball past the wall and into the goal from the crossbar.

“They didn’t need the penalty,” Simon Hill said in commentary. “It’s all square at 1-1.”

“Well the Socceroos midfielder who might be emerging as a star of tomorrow has become a star of tonight,” added Harper.

“His set-pieces to date have left a little bit to be desired in truth, but he gets the moment. From the edge of the box he makes no mistake. He plunges a samurai sword into the heart of Hajime Moriyasu the coach of Japan, it gives Graham Arnold and the Socceroos renewed hope. The Blue Samurai might wobble from here.”

Australia would be left devastated by a late own goal from Aziz Behich, who had a tough evening at left-back and was the cause of the two goals they conceded in their first defeat in 12 matches.

The 2-1 defeat was the Socceroos’ eighth straight against the Blue Samurai.

But the VAR decision, which proved to be the correct call, had fans and pundits across the world talking about the decision which threatened to derail Australia’s 11-match winning run.

Hrustic, however, somewhat silenced the debate with his stunning finish, which quickly changed the narrative.
