Ange Postecoglou, Celtic new manager, Australian football, Yokohama FC, Eddie Howe, reaction, updates

Former Socceroos boss Ange Postecoglou is in line for a stunning appointment as manager of Scottish football giant Celtic.

The Telegraph’s John Percy reports that Celtic are “in advanced talks” with Postecoglou and are close to confirming that he will take over as manager.

The 55-year old has previously managed Australia, Melbourne Victory and Brisbane Roar – winning two A-League championships with the latter.

He also won the Asian Cup with Australia in 2015 and the J-League Title with Yokohama FM – his current club – in 2019.

What made his success at Yokahama FM even more incredible was the fact he took them all the way in only his second year with the club, who were struggling before his arrival.

Socceroos legend Craig Moore, who had a successful career with Rangers in Scotland, declared Postecoglou would be an instant hit.

Postecoglou was installed by several UK bookmakers as the favourite to take the top job at Celtic.

It comes after ex-Bournemouthe manager Eddie Howe was ruled out of contention.

“We can now confirm that Eddie will not be joining the club, for reasons outside both his and Celtic’s control,” the club said on Friday.

It would be a big break for Postecoglou, who has long been tipped to be Australia’s next best chance at being a European trailblazer.

Both Kevin Muscat and Tony Popovic have recently spent time in managerial roles in Europe but neither lasted long in the positions.

Muscat was sacked after just 14 games as head coach of Belgian Pro League team Sint-Truidense while Popovic parted ways with Greek Super League 2 side Xanthi FC after nine matches.
