Matildas open Tokyo campaign with a win! | 00:32

PREVIEW

The Olyroos haven’t made the Olympics since 2008, but coach Graham Arnold – an Olympian himself at Seoul 1988 – says the side aren’t there to make up the numbers.

“We come into this tournament with great expectations to go far in the tournament and win games,” Arnold said.

“I truly believe a lot in this group. In the players that we’ve got. It’s a young group but they’ve got a lot of energy.”

He added: “It’s a great talented squad of young players. They’ve got great energy. And they’re ready to shock the world.

I expect some of our players to take the tournament by storm. We’ve got a great, talented squad. We respect the opposition. We know what their strengths are and where they’re too exposed, their weaknesses, so it’s more the focus on our own performance.”

The Olyroos are Australia’s Under-23s team, though that age limit has been raised by a year for Tokyo after the Olympics were delayed by a year. Each side may have three players above the age limit, though Arnold opted to select only two this tournament – veteran Socceroos striker Mitch Duke and Central Coast Mariners defender Ruon Tongyik, who is mere weeks outside of the age limit.

Their group is extremely tough: Argentina – the current South American champions at both the U-23 and senior level; Spain, the current U-23 European champions; and Egypt, the current U-23 African champions.

But Arnold has plenty of experience at Olympic level, as a player in 1988, assistant coach in 2004, and head coach in 2008.
