Florentino Perez claims clubs can’t leave ESL, Manchester United, Liverpool

European Super League mastermind Florentino Perez claims that the clubs who signed up to the controversial competition have “binding contracts” and “cannot leave”.

Twelve of the richest and most powerful teams in Europe last week announced they would be joining the invite-only competition, only for all six Premier League clubs to pull out 48 hours later after furious fan backlash.

But Read Madrid president Perez claims their withdrawal is not so simple as the Spanish giants, along with Barcelona, hold onto hope of forming the breakaway league that would change European football forever.

“I don’t need to explain what a binding contract is, but effectively the clubs cannot leave,” he told AS newspaper.

“Some of them, due to pressure, have said they’re leaving. But this project, or one very similar, will move forward and I hope very soon.”

He also said reports that league investors JP Morgan had pulled out of providing a A$5bn loan to founding members were “not true”.

“They have taken some time for reflection, just like the 12 clubs. If we need to make changes we will but the Super League is the best project we’ve thought of,” Perez said.

“What we have done is taken a few weeks to reflect in light of the fury of certain people who don’t want to lose their privileges and have manipulated the project.”

Perez earlier claimed the league was on “stand by” after Arsenal, Chelsea, Liverpool, Manchester City, Manchester United and Tottenham withdrew together.

Atletico Madrid, AC Milan and Inter Milan followed, while Juventus chairman Andrew Agnelli concedes the project could no longer go ahead.
