F1 news 2021, Imola Grand Prix, Lewis Hamilton, Max Verstappen, George Russell, Mercedes, driver line up, McLaren, Zak Brown

Max Verstappen and George Russell have been tipped to jump ship to Mercedes for the 2022 season in what has been described as “the obvious conclusion” by McLaren CEO Zak Brown.

Mercedes currently has the longest-serving driver partnership on the grid, with Lewis Hamilton and Valtteri Bottas beginning their fifth season together.

But with the new sweeping regulations coming in next season set to refresh the field, Mercedes are expected to look to the future and change up one, if not both of their drivers.

Bottas is the obvious name who they will look to replace first, but a lot too will depend on Lewis Hamilton and whether he decides to retire should he claim a record eighth world championship this season.

While Daniel Ricciardo had a “more positive day” in qualifying for the Spanish Grand Prix, he could have finished as high as fourth if not for a missed opportunity.

Ricciardo described it as a “mini breakthrough” as he adjusts to life at McLaren but was left slightly disappointed after he “ran out of time” for his final lap at the end of the session.

“In saying that, there’s maybe a bit of a what could have been because we missed the last run,” Ricciardo said.

Red Bull’s Max Verstappen finally got the better of the men from Mercedes at the third attempt in practice when clocking the fastest lap in Saturday’s closing session for the Spanish Grand Prix.

Eclipsed by Valtteri Bottas in the first session and Lewis Hamilton in the second, Verstappen rose to the top of the times ahead of what promises to be an evenly contested qualifying session.

The Dutch driver, eight points adrift of Hamilton in the drivers’ standings, was 0.235sec too quick for the seven-time world champion, with Ferrari duo Charles Leclerc and Carlos Sainz and Bottas completing the top five.
