EPL results 2021, Manchester United vs Liverpool FC, Sadio Mane, Jurgen Klopp, handshake video, watch

Sadio Mane has sparked suggestions of a major rift between himself and manager Jurgen Klopp following Liverpool’s 4-2 win over Manchester United at Old Trafford.

Mane, who has suffered an under-par season after the highs of the last two years, was dropped for Diogo Jota in the Reds’ starting XI in a must-win game for their Champions League aspirations for next year.

He was brought on towards the end as a substitute and fluffed a one-on-one chance, but the big flashpoint came after the final whistle.

Cameras caught Klopp doing his usual post-match ritual of fist-bumping and shaking all of the players’ hands – until he got to Mane.

As he tried to shake Mane’s hand, the forward ignored his advances, shook his head and walked off while saying something inaudible to his manager.

Klopp tried to play down the incident after the game, insisting it was just his disappointment at not starting and nothing more.

“No there’s no problem. Yesterday I made a late decision in training to go with Diogo Jota. I would usually explain it but there was no time for that. It is all fine.”

Former Liverpool captain Graeme Sounness was less forgiving however, branding Mane’s actions “disrespectful”.

He told Sky Sports: “Disrespectful. It’s never happened to me so I can’t tell you what I’d be like in that situation but I would not be happy.

“He should have shook his hand, he doesn’t want a cuddle, he doesn’t feel loved by Jurgen but he needs to show a bit of respect.

“It’s disrespectful to the manager, it’s disrespectful to the football club.

“Yes, of course he’s not happy about being left out – but can he really argue? He’s not had a great season.

“How could you argue with the fact that he’s been a sub when Liverpool won at Old Trafford 4-2, which is not a happy hunting ground for them.”

Ex-Manchester United skipper Roy Keane agreed, but argued Klopp should have been more aware.

“I think the player is out of order,” he said. “But there’s a new trend amongst managers of going onto the pitch and giving everyone high fives.

“I know when I was a player I didn’t want the manager coming on and giving me high fives. If we won the league, maybe, but even then I’d be doubtful. Absolutely not.

“If he sees the players upset, just back away.”
