Liverpool have taken a huge step towards securing Champions League football next season with a thrilling 3-2 win over Manchester United at Old Trafford.

United were forced to head to the ground early and Liverpool sent a decoy bus to make sure the game could go ahead as anti-Glazer protests again threatened the already-postponed clash between England’s two most successful clubs.

Stand-in captain Bruno Fernandes opened the scoring with a deflected effort early on, but United failed to make their early dominance count as two defensive lapses saw Liverpool get back into it before half time.

Diogo Jota and Roberto Firmino both found the net as United completely switched off in the absence of their skipper Harry Maguire to go in at the break 2-1 down.

And it quickly became 3-1 in the worst goal of the lot as United suffered three head-scratching blunders in the same move to see Firmino claim his second.

Marcus Rashford eventually pulled one back to set up a grandstand finish but Mason Greenwood’s effort was cleared off the line.

As United continued to press hard Mo Salah raced away to seal the win with a well-taken fourth.

That result leaves the Reds just four points behind fourth-placed Chelsea with a game in hand and the Blues still to play third-placed Leicester City, whose place in the Champions League is not yet secure either.

More follows.
