Manchester United striker Edinson Cavani said on Monday he expects to return to South America from the English Premier League at the end of next season.

Last month, Cavani ended uncertainty over his immediate future by committing to a second season with the Red Devils, to the delight of United’s fans as well as his manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer.

The 34-year-old was a huge hit in his first season, scoring 17 goals, including a run of 10 in his last 10 matches.

“I decided to play there for one more year. I think there’s a good team which is one reason to stay,” said Cavani during a videoconference in Montevideo ahead of Uruguay’s first Copa America match on Friday.

But he admitted his representatives had been in contact with South American clubs over a possible return.

“There were negotiations. My brother (and agent) had some chats … things that happen in football, they’re normal,” said the forward, who has not played club football in his home continent since leaving Uruguayans Danubio for Palermo in Italy in 2007.

“There’s nothing certain, but I think at some point I’ll come back to South America, I’ll play here.”

Meanwhile, teammate David de Gea is reportedly “in the dark” about his Manchester United future.

The Mirror reports that Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is planning crunch talks with de Gea, who was replaced as Premier League keeper by Dean Henderson towards the end of the season.

He did though nab the starting gig in the Europa League final and is expected to begin talks with Solskjaer after Euro 2020.

De Gea could opt to look elsewhere if Henderson is the regular starter.

CHELSEA EYE OFF INTER DEFENDER

Elsewhere, Chelsea are eyeing Achraf Hakimi according to reports in the Daily Express but he may not be keen.

The report claims the Inter Milan defender has been courted by the Blues recently with Thomas Tuchel looking to add a world-class right-side defender to the squad.

Hakimi reportedly would prefer a switch to Paris Saint-Germain instead of Chelsea.

The Blues are so keen that they already put in a cheeky bid estimated to be worth around £51m ($A94m) but it was knocked back.

Tuchel had told reporters last month that he was looking to add a few key names in the pursuit of a title.

“Two or three could be very, very good,” Tuchel told reporters last month.

“It’s a constant thing to never deny change.

“That you always bring new energy, new guys who question the old beliefs, who challenge everybody in the training and in matches, so I think it’s a good thing.”

LEICESTER IN SHOCK MOVE FOR $260M STAR

In other news, Leicester City are reportedly considering a shock bid for Barcelona’s Phillipe Coutinho.

The 29-year old has struggled to live up to lofty expectations since joining from Liverpool, scoring just 15 LaLiga goals from 64 Spanish top-flight appearances.

Spanish newspaper Mundo Deportivo reports Barcelona are looking to get rid of Coutinho and Leicester is circling with a £20m ($A37m) move on the cards.

Only adding more intrigue to the potential switch is the fact current Foxes boss Brendan Rodgers worked with Coutinho during his time at Liverpool in the 2013-14 season.

Everton and Arsenal have also been linked to Coutinho but Leicester is playing European football in the 2021-22 season – a crucial advantage.

Coutinho joined Barcelona from Liverpool in January 2018 on a deal reported to be worth £142 million ($A260m).
