Steven Gerrard, sent off for rant at referee, Rangers vs Livingston, news, Scottish Premiership,

Liverpool legend and Rangers coach Steven Gerrard was sent off after tearing a referee to shreds over a controversial penalty decision in the Scottish Premiership.

Gerrard’s rangers are within touching distance of a drought-breaking title after a 1-0 win over Livingston that saw Gerrard red carded at half time for berating referee John Beaton.

Rangers striker Alfredo Morelos was controversially booked for diving after being taken down in the box by Livingston keeper Max Stryjek, which infuriated Gerrard.

Gerrard marched onto the pitch to confront the referee at the interval, and was heard telling the referee: “So you’re not speaking to me? I know why you’re not speaking to me – because you were f***ing bang wrong. You’re bang out of order.”

That earned him a yellow card, before Gerrard almost immediately copped a second yellow for continuing to lash out at the referee.

That saw him spend the second half in the stands, watching on as Morelos made amends for the controversial call by scoring the winner three minutes from time.

Even Livingston boss David Martindale agreed it should have been a penalty.

He said: “I think we got a wee bit lucky in the first half, I think it was a penalty looking at it back.”

And Gerrard was fuming after the match.

He said: “It’s a blatant penalty, it’s a stonewaller. I’m someone who wants to support officials because we are all human and we will make a mistake.

“But what I can’t stand for at this level is three people making the same mistake. They all had clear views of it. I could see it and I’m the furthest away.

“There are three officials at this level who all got it wrong together – I can’t have that. I asked for an explanation and he refused to speak to me.

“You are talking about officials at a top level of the game. I’ll go with one making a mistake, because we are all human. But I can’t have it when three make the same mistake and are all looking at the incident. That’s unfair.”

But as for Morelos, Gerrard said his Colombian striker wasn’t worried about his growing – if somewhat unfair – reputation for simulation.

“Don’t worry about Alfredo,” Gerrard said. “He’s just scored the winner.

“He’s dancing around in there here with no top on to Sweet Caroline! He is fine.”
