Macarthur FC beat Western United after Sydney rain bomb, scores, updates, video highlights

A pair of perfect headers completed Macarthur FC’s fight back against Western United at a soggy Campbelltown Stadium.

First half goals to Matt Derbyshire and Markel Susaeta earned the home side a 2-1 win, as the match between the A-League’s newest teams went ahead despite a day of torrential rain in Sydney.

It ends a miserable week in Sydney for United, who also lost to Sydney FC last weekend, while the result sees Macarthur move up to third on the ladder.

“For us to go a goal down and then get back into the game, scoring two good goals to win the match at home in these conditions, the boys are very pleased,” said Macarthur coach Ante Milicic.

“They deserve full credit for their professionalism.”

The two teams met under a deluge, but the pitch held up admirably as Macarthur made amends for their last encounter when they were on the losing side of a 4-1 scoreline.

The home side came into the match with back-to-back defeats behind them and under pressure to get back to scoring ways.

But they had to overcome an early deficit, in the end doing well to recover after going behind in just the eighth minute of the match.

Alessandro Diamanti’s diagonal pass found Dylan Pierias, who cut inside Tommy Oar before unleashing a wonderful, left-footed shot into the top corner. It was the fullback’s fifth goal of the season for United and certainly one of his very best.

Macarthur clawed their way back into the game in challenging conditions and thoroughly deserved their 35th minute equaliser. It came through Derbyshire, who scored his eighth goal of the season with an excellent, looping header to beat Ryan Scott.

It was Macarthur’s first goal since their 1-0 win over Sydney FC on February 28, Derbyshire again with the goal on that occasion.

Then Markel Susaeta’s goal on the stroke of half time saw the home side go into the break with a deserved advantage.

Oar whipped in a pinpoint cross from the left and the ball was met by Susaeta, who headed in to give Macarthur a 2-1 lead in the 46th minute.

“What frustrated me the most was during the week we spoke about the amount of crosses they get in,” said United coach Mark Rudan.

“We worked a lot of defending crosses and yet we conceded two goals from crosses.”

The home side held firm at the start of the second half, forcing Rudan to bring on some reinforcements. Lachy Wales made an impact when he came on with his injection of pace, but in the end it wasn’t nearly enough as United failed to get a grip on the match.

SYDNEY DELUGE

It was something of a miracle that the Campbelltown Stadium pitch held up for the match. Torrential rain saw Sydney FC’s double-header in Kogarah called off, but Macarthur’s match against Western United went ahead. Playing conditions were far from ideal for the players, with Macarthur adjusting to them better.

HOME SWEET HOME

After more than a month away from Campbelltown Stadium, Macarthur returned to win back-to-back home matches for the first time in their short history. It’s also the first time they’ve come from a goal down to win the match.
