Jose Mourinho’s emotional interview as Tottenham Spurs lose in Croatia, video

An emotional Jose Mourinho says his team not only failed the “basics of football” but the “basics of life”, as Tottenham were bundled out of the Europa League on Thursday (Friday AEDT).

After taking a 2-0 advantage into the second-leg of their round of 16 match against Dinamo Zagreb, Spurs conceded two second-half goals in the Croatian capital. Mislav Orsic then completed his hat-trick in the second period of extra time to knock the London-side out.

Former player and manager Glenn Hoddle described the second-leg as “diabolic” and “a disaster”.

Speaking after the match, Mourinho didn’t disagree and bemoaned his side’s attitude.

“They [Dinamo] left sweat, energy, blood. In the end they left even tears of happiness,” Mourinho told BT Sport. “They were very humble and committed. I have to praise them.

“On the other side, my team – I repeat, my team – didn’t look like it was playing an important match. If for any one of them it is not important, for me it is.

“I am disappointed for a difference of attitude of one team to another. I feel sorry that my team is the team that didn’t bring to the game not just the basics of football but the basics of life, which is to respect our jobs and to give everything.

“I can only apologise to the Tottenham supporters. I hope they feel the same way I feel. Today is live or die – and in this moment, we die.”

Coming off the back of a derby loss to Arsenal, Tottenham looked comfortable in the early stages of the match.

But two goals in 20 minutes midway through the second half left Spurs searching for answers.

They never came.

Spurs had late opportunities at the end of regular time and extra time, but goalkeeper Dominik Livakovic made two strong saves.

Mourinho said that he warned his side that they needed to bring a strong attitude into the game and couldn’t rest on their two-nil opening leg lead.

“Many times I fear my thoughts, my feelings but I don’t blame myself in the sense that I always share them,” he said.

“Before the game, I told the players the risks of a bad attitude.

“I told them at halftime, even with 0-0, the risk of playing the way we were playing and it happened because I believe that the players only realised the game was in risk when they scored the second goal and it went to extra-time.”

Self-proclaimed as the ‘Special One’, the well-respected coach said he was sad that his team didn’t bring the necessary application to the game.

“For the respect I have for my career and my job, every match is important,” Mourinho said. “For every Tottenham fan at home, every match matters. Another attitude is needed. What I feel is much more than sadness.

“I just left the Dinamo dressing room where I went to praise the guys and I feel sorry it is not my team who won the game based on attitude and compromise. I feel more than sad.

“Football is not just about players who think they have more quality than others. The basis of football is attitude. They beat us on that.”

Asked whether he was concerned that the players don’t seem to be listening or responding to what he was telling them, Mourinho didn’t dodge the question.

“Of course it concerns me. Of course it concerns me,” he said.

“We worked very hard, we tried to provide the best conditions for the players to perform. Of course it concerns me.”
