Wolves have suffered a second sickening head injury to one of their key players after goalkeeper Rui Patricio was stretchered off towards the end of the 1-0 defeat to Liverpool and Molineux.

The incident occurred when Mohamed Salah raced through on goal, rounded Patricio and finished into the empty net, only to be flagged for offside.

However, during the incident as all eyes were on Salah and the ball, Wolves captain Conor Coady collided with Patricio, leaving the Portuguese goalkeeper in a heap on the floor.

Patricio wasn’t moving after the collision as TV directors decided against showing a replay of the incident – something usually done when there is a possibility of a serious injury.

Patricio was stretchered off after receiving nearly 15 minutes of treatment on the field as Wolves brought on John Ruddy as a concussion substitute to replace him.

The game ended in the 109th minute as former Wolves star Diogo Jota gave the Reds the win, but all thoughts were firmly with Patricio.

“Life is more important, we wish [Rui Patricio] a speedy recovery,” Jota said of his former teammate after the full-time whistle. “I hope it’s not anything too serious. I wish him a speedy recovery if it is.”

Former England goalkeeper told BBC Radio 5 Live: “It’s a horrible, sickening feeling when you realise the enormity of it. It’s one which, from that point on, everyone could have done with going home.”

Fortunately, Wolves boss Nuno Espirito Santo said Patricio was “OK” and talking.

He said: “We just had an update now, he’s OK. It was a collision with the knee of Coady on the head. We have spoken already. He is OK. All these situations when it is the head get us worried. He is OK. He is going to recover.”

Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp added: “It was an awful situation. I have spoken to Wolves staff, they are rather positive. It was a proper shock.”

It is the second major head injury suffered by one of Wolves’ stars this season following the incident to striker Raul Jimenez after a collision with Arsenal defender David Luiz in November which left him with a fractured skull.
