Brisbane Roar postpone clash against Western United as Moreton Daily Stadium declared damaged

Their A-League fixture might be still another two days away, but the Brisbane Roar have been forced to postpone Saturday’s match against Western United because of an unfit pitch.

Roar CEO David Pourre was left red-faced at the Thursday afternoon announcement, with the Moreton Daily Stadium pitch significantly impacted following the extreme weather hitting the eastern seaboard.

“It’s disappointing to have to make this decision, but it’s a decision made in the best interests of the players, members and fans,” Pourre said in a statement.

“We know from experience that Moreton Daily Stadium is traditionally home to one of the best playing surfaces in Australia.

“Unfortunately, the pitch has been damaged by the recent extreme weather events and will not meet the high expectations around player safety despite the best efforts of all parties.

“We saw a similar situation with the postponement of the Big Blue in Sydney last weekend, and we have moved quickly to make this decision for the benefit of our members and fans.”

After years of playing at Suncorp Stadium, the Roar opted to move to the more intimate setting at Moreton Daily Stadium, which holds approximately 10,000.

But the venue is 30 kilometres north of Brisbane’s CBD.

Pourre said he expected the pitch to be fit for Easter Saturday’s clash against Western Sydney Wanderers.

“We do have full confidence that the Moreton Daily Stadium pitch will be back to its best in time for our Matchweek 15 game against Western Sydney Wanderers on Easter Saturday and our A-League preparations are focusing on that match.”

The postponement comes less than a week after the double header between Sydney FC and Melbourne Victory also had to be delayed.
