Cristiano Ronaldo angry at referee after winner ruled out, Portugal vs Serbia, World Cup qualifier, news, scores, results

Cristiano Ronaldo delivered an all-time meltdown after being denied what appeared to be a late winner for Portugal in a World Cup qualification draw with Serbia.

Portugal seemed to be cruising to a comfortable win in Belgrade after Liverpool attacker Diogo Jota scored twice in the first half.

But substitute Nemanja Radonjic changed the game for Serbia, as he assisted Aleksander Mitrovic then Filip Kostic to pull things back to 2-2 by the hour mark.

With the match in stoppage time, Ronaldo thought he had scored only for referees to rule the ball had not fully crossed the line before being cleared by desperate Serbian captain Stefan Mitrovic – despite replays appearing to show the ball had clearly crossed the white line.

The Portugal megastar ran to the linesman and began angrily remonstrating, which earned the legendary Juventus striker a yellow card for dissent.

With no video assistant referee (VAR) in use during World Cup qualification, and no goal line technology available, Dutch referee Danny Makkelie’s original call of no goal stood.

Ronaldo stormed off the pitch at the full-time whistle, throwing his captain’s armband to the ground as he fumed down the tunnel.
