“He’s a beast.”

That’s how IndyCar legend Scott Dixon has described fellow Kiwi Scott McLaughlin after the Supercars star’s disappointing debut in Florida.

The legend of Dixon keeps growing, with the 40-year-old claiming his sixth IndyCar series title with a third placing in Florida on Monday.

Dixon said the hardest part of a “crazy” season came when the racing was shut down because of Covid-19 just before the first race, plunging the teams into two months of “unknowns”.

Race officials and drivers praised the modern safety systems developed for Formula One on Sunday after Romain Grosjean survived a high-speed crash and fireball blaze on the opening lap of the Bahrain Grand Prix.

Safety and official medical car driver Alan van der Merwe was on the scene within seconds as he followed the field after the start of the race and along with chief medical officer Dr Ian Roberts they battled the blaze to save Grosjean’s life.

“It’s a miracle that he’s alive,” said 1996 world champion Damon Hill, who was Ayrton Senna’s team-mate at the 1994 San Marino Grand Prix when the Brazilian was killed.

Formula One, Bahrain Grand Prix: 1.10am AEDT, LIVE —

F1’s twenty drivers will do battle on one of the most brutal tracks on the Formula 1 calendar early on Monday morning (AEDT) at the Bahrain GP.

Daniel Ricciardo knows all too well just how painful the Sakhir Circuit can be, having retired just four laps from the finish in 2019 just metres away from then-Renault teammate Nico Hulkenberg. In 2018, Ricciardo was part of another double-DNF, then racing with Red Bull.

This year, Ricciardo will begin his hunt for redemption from sixth on the grid after an impressive qualifying saw him pip teammate Esteban Ocon by just 0.002 seconds.

Friday’s practice at Bahrain was full of drama, with everything from huge crashes to even a stray dog on track.

Testing new Pirelli tyres for the 2021 season, plenty of the drivers struggled for pace and grip. In the second session, Red Bull’s Max Verstappen spun out on the final corner, but it was his teammate Alex Albon that suffered a monster shunt.

Saturday’s third practice session and qualifying promises to be just as interesting!
