F1 2020: Daniel Ricciardo Bathurst 1000 wildcard with McLaren, Supercars

Published

The door is opening for Daniel Ricciardo to make a shock wildcard entry with his future McLaren team at the Bathurst 1000.

The Aussie Formula 1 driver has repeatedly flirted with the idea of driving a Supercar competitively — and his new team could provide the ingredients to make the dream a reality.

The 30-year-old star confirmed last week he is making a seismic move from Renault to English-based team McLaren for the 2021 Formula 1 season — and his new team boss Zak Brown is already thinking of side projects for Ricciardo to sink his teeth into when he arrives at the end of the 2020 season.

One of those projects includes a wildcard entry into the Bathurst 1000.

Brown, who bought into Supercars team Walkinshaw Andretti United in 2018, gave a preliminary green light to the project in a recent interview with Supercars Sidetracked on Fox Sports.

Formula 1 Austrian Grand Prix 2020 (11.10pm EST) — Almost four months after teams abandoned the Australian Grand Prix, the 2020 Formula One season finally gets underway tonight.

The first in a revised eight-race calendar takes place on Sunday night (11.10pm EST) at Austria’s Red Bull Ring, where Lewis Hamilton’s quest for a Michael Schumacher-equalling seventh world title begins.

He will have to start the race, however, from second on the grid after Mercedes teammate Valtteri Bottas beat him to pole on Saturday by just 0.012 seconds.

F1 2020, Austrian Grand Prix: McLaren qualifying result good news for Daniel Ricciardo, Lando Norris

Published

Daniel Ricciardo may be cursing his luck after the F1 season’s first qualifying session on Saturday, but he still has more than one reason to smile.

The Renault driver qualified for the Austrian Grand Prix in 10th — a disappointing result given he could have went faster without yellow flags forcing him to slow on his flying lap.

But way up ahead in fourth position was a surprise result that Ricciardo will no doubt secretly enjoy.
