The Formula 1 grid shake-up for 2021 may have only just begun with rumours emerging Mercedes star Valtteri Bottas may also be on the move.

A German report has claimed the seven-time grand prix winner has allowed his manager to meet with Renault boss Cyril Abiteboul recently over the seat vacated by Aussie Daniel Ricciardo last week.

Ricciardo’s move to McLaren followed hot on the heels of Ferrari’s dramatic parting of ways with Sebastian Vettel and the iconic Formula 1 team’s decision to snatch Spaniard Carlos Sainz away from McLaren to partner young star Charles Leclerc from 2021.

Ferrari held talks with Daniel Ricciardo over replacing Sebastian Vettel at Ferrari before giving the dream drive to Carlos Sainz Jnr instead, the Australian has revealed.

Ricciardo has long been linked with Ferrari where many argue he would be a good fit given his racing talent and his family’s Italian heritage.

He first held talks with Ferrari in 2018 when he was coming off-contract at Red Bull — he signed with Renault instead — and contact between the two parties didn’t stop until now.

F1 news 2020, spending cap, how much, when, Daniel Ricciardo, new rules, next race

Published

F1’s big and wide-ranging package of cost-cutting measures – headlined by a tighter budget cap – have been approved to make the sport more sustainable and competitive into the future.

Rubber stamped by the World Motor Sport council on Wednesday, F1 will introduce a $145m budget cap from next season and – for the first time – an aero development handicap system for the more successful teams.

“Formula 1 wins today,” said McLaren’s Zak Brown. “This is a crucially important moment for our sport.

“F1 has been financially unsustainable for some time, and inaction would have risked the future of F1 and its participants, who are to be commended for resolving this issue collectively and determinedly.”

Daniel Abt has been sacked by the Audi Formula E team after cheating in an online Esports race.

Incredibly, the German was disqualified from the virtual Berlin E-Prix and fined €10,000 (A$16,500) after he let professional Esports sim racer, Lorenz Hoerzing, take his place.

Furious Audi chiefs have now responded by axing the 27-year-old with immediate effect.
