Spanish veteran Carlos Sainz stretched his lead atop the overall Dakar Rally standings by winning the 10th stage through the dunes of Saudi Arabia’s Empty Quarter on Wednesday.

The 57-year-old Mini driver clocked 2hr 03min 43sec on a stage shortened by high winds to a 233km special between Haradh and Shubaytah, finishing ahead of Poland’s Jakub Przygonski (mini) and South African Giniel de Villier (Toyota).

Sainz took full advantage of navigational problems by closest rivals Nasser Al-Attiyah, the defending champion, and France’s ‘Mr. Dakar’, Stephane Peterhansel.

Supercars 2020: Mark Skaife, Holden retirement announcement

Published

on

Mark Skaife has opened up on the shock announcement of the Holden brand’s retirement, with the Supercars legend admitting discussing his “sadness” over the news.

General Motors dropped a bombshell on the motoring industry on Monday by announcing they were “retiring” the iconic Australian brand by 2021 in the wake of falling domestic sales for Holden vehicles.

Critically, the announcement has plunged Holden’s Supercars future in doubt, despite a contract extension between the brand and the Red Bull Holden Racing Team being announced in July last year.

Denny Hamlin won his second straight Daytona 500 and third overall, beating Ryan Blaney in an overtime photo finish marred by a terrifying crash that sent Ryan Newman to hospital.

Newman had surged into the lead on the final lap when Blaney’s bumper caught the back of his Ford and sent Newman hard right into the wall.

His car flipped, rolled, was hit on the driver’s side by another car, and finally skidded across the finish line engulfed in flames.

It took several minutes for his car to be rolled back onto its wheels. He was placed in a waiting ambulance and taken directly to a hospital. Drivers were stricken with concern, including a rattled Corey LaJoie, the driver who hit Newman’s car as it was flipping.
