The 2020 edition of the Dubai 24 Hours race has been thrust into the spotlight following an ugly incident in the pit lane.

After the green flag dropped to get the endurance race underway, it was only a few hours in when the serious incident unfolded during a busy round of stops.

A pit crew member on the No 989 MRS GT-Racing team began to wave their Porsche 991 away following their stop when a crew member on another team injected himself.

The No 77 Barwell Motorsport Lamborghini Huracan was in the middle of its own pit stop in the next box when the crew member raced to grab a new tyre, as he turned and began to run back to the car he shoved the GT-Racing crew member into the path of the departing Porsche 991.

Daniel Ricciardo says McLaren’s forced withdrawal from the Australian Grand Prix was a “bombshell” for him to read on the eve of the Albert Park race.

The Renault star said he and his team are preparing to return to racing in July in a wide-ranging interview about the suspended Formula 1 season and the impact coronavirus has had on the sport.

His suggestion of a July return goes against the official Formula 1 calendar, which still has two races scheduled for June.

The 30-year-old star said his resolve to race at his home grand prix this year was already wavering before McLaren stunned the rest of the grid by pulling out on the Thursday before the race.

F1 2020: Coronavirus shutdown; Red Bull, Helmut Marko plan to build immunity, Max Verstappen

An official at Formula One team Red Bull has proposed holding a training camp that would expose drivers to the coronavirus so they could build immunity to the disease while the season is suspended.

The idea by motorsport adviser Helmut Marko was rejected by the team.

Marko said it would be good for the team’s drivers to be infected now so they could recover in time for scheduled races later in the year.

Mercedes F1 team helps develop groundbreaking breathing aid amid deadly pandemic

Formula 1 team Mercedes has helped to develop a breathing aid that could keep coronavirus patients out of intensive care and ease some pressure on Britain’s strained health service.

Mercedes worked with engineers at the University College London and clinicians at University College London Hospital to adapt and improve a device that bridges the gap between an oxygen mask and the need for full ventilation.

The device, known as continuous positive airway pressure, has been used extensively in hospitals in Italy and China to deliver oxygen to the lungs of coronavirus patients during the pandemic.
