F1 2019, Lewis Hamilton, world championship, when F1 title can be won

Published

on

Lewis Hamilton will have his first chance to clinch a sixth F1 world championship in Sunday’s Mexican Grand Prix.

Hamilton leads Mercedes teammate Valtteri Bottas, his only remaining title challenger after the Finn’s impressive win at Suzuka, by 64 points with this weekend’s race in Mexico City the first of four left in the 2019 season.

There are a maximum of 78 points up for grabs in the three races after Sunday — meaning Hamilton needs to increase his current advantage by 14 points or more on Sunday evening to be champion.

Alex Albon crashed out after posting the fastest time of Friday’s rain-hit opening practice session of the Brazilian Grand Prix.

The London-born Thai, who earlier this week was confirmed as a Red Bull driver for 2020, lost control of his car at Sao Paulo’s Interlagos circuit after switching to slick tyres.

Australia’s Daniel Ricciardo posted the seventh fastest FP1 time from his nine laps out on the course in his Renault, clocking 1 minute 17.985 seconds. Lewis Hamilton, the newly-crowned six-time world champion, finished bottom after opting against posting a time in the tricky conditions.

Breakout French rookie Fabio Quartararo posted the fastest time in both practice sessions for the season-ending Valencia Grand Prix on Friday, with world champion Marc Marquez third on the timesheets.

The 20-year-old Quartararo has emerged as a fascinating subplot this season as he bids to end a 20-year French barren run in MotoGP by winning his first race after five pole positions and six podium finishes in his debut top-flight season.

On the 4km Ricardo Tormo circuit, the rider edged out fellow Yamaha man Maverick Vinales in the second session, with six-time top-class world champion Marquez coming third.
