While centre stage will be taken by the championship’s main protagonists at Mount Panorama this weekend, two wildcard entries will be looking to make waves at the mountain.

The grid has expanded to 26 cars for this weekend’s Supercheap Auto Bathurst 1000 — Walkinshaw Andretti United will run a NAPA-backed ZB Commodore for IndyCar stars Alexander Rossi and James Hinchcliffe, while Kostecki cousins Brodie and Jake will also make their Great Race debuts.

The 2009 race marked the return of wildcards to Mount Panorama after five years without non-series regulars, and wildcards have made select appearances since — and not just at Bathurst.

F1 2020: Williams 2020 F1 car reveal, 2020 F1 car livery

Published

on

Williams have revealed a dramatic new livery for a 2020 season in which they have vowed to “fight” and improve their F1 fortunes with the new FW43 car.

Significantly, after missing the start of testing last year, the new car has already hit the track at the team’s filming day at Barcelona ahead of the start of full winter testing on Wednesday.

The nine-time constructors’ champions endured the worst season in their illustrious history in 2019, when they finished bottom of the Constructors’ Championship with a single point, and were cut off from the rest of the field for most of the campaign.

The FW43 is described an “evolution” of last year’s car with the team having “carefully chosen parts of the car to develop, those that would give us the most performance for the resources we have”, rather than opting for a wholesale change of concept.

Holden: Mark Skaife battling to hold back tears after Supercars bombshell

The future of Holden’s Supercars partnership with powerhouse Triple Eight Race Engineering remains unclear following parent company General Motors decision to scrap the automotive brand.

GM stunned Supercars teams and officials on Monday by announcing they were “retiring” the iconic Australian brand by 2021 after plunging domestic sales for Holden vehicles.

Retired Australian motor racing driver Mark Skaife has revealed he was “battling to hold back tears” after hearing news General Motors will axe iconic brand Holden after 72 years of operation in Australia.

“I just never in my lifetime thought that there’d be a day where we would see Holden move out of this country,” Mr Skaife told Sky News host Paul Murray.

The six-time Bathurst 1000 winner said despite seeing “worrying signs” over Holden’s future, it didn’t make Monday’s announcement “any less sad”.
