The door is open for Fernando Alonso to join McLaren’s IndyCar venture in 2020, despite the Spaniard previously indicating little interest in joining the series full time.

Earlier this week, McLaren announced a partnership with Schmidt Peterson Racing for a full-time assault on IndyCar next season.

It encouraged rumours of a return for Fernando Alonso, who competed with McLaren in the 2017 Indianapolis 500 before failing to qualify for this year’s race.

F1 2020 Austrian GP: Daniel Ricciardo result, reaction, why he had to retire, Renault

Published

on

Daniel Ricciardo remains optimistic about a competitive final season with Renault, despite his season opener again ending in retirement.

The Australian made a bright start from 10th place but his Austrian Grand Prix only lasted 17 laps before being forced into a precautionary retirement due to a cooling issue.

Riccardio had four mid-race retirements last season, including in the opener in Australia, however he was still upbeat about the car and team’s performance as teammate Esteban Ocon finished eighth.

“Today was a reminder of what Formula 1 can be like and, sometimes, it’s unkind,” said Ricciardo, one of a whopping nine retirements in a chaotic race.
