The new changes to the Ford Mustang are “good for the sport”, according to Tickford Racing boss Tim Edwards.

For only the second time this decade, Ford has sealed the Manufacturers’ Championship with Mustangs victorious in 16 of the season’s 18 races.

All six Mustangs are placed in the top 10 after the eighth round in Townsville. At the same stage 12 months ago, just three Mustangs sat in the top 10.

The door is open for Fernando Alonso to join McLaren’s IndyCar venture in 2020, despite the Spaniard previously indicating little interest in joining the series full time.

Earlier this week, McLaren announced a partnership with Schmidt Peterson Racing for a full-time assault on IndyCar next season.

It encouraged rumours of a return for Fernando Alonso, who competed with McLaren in the 2017 Indianapolis 500 before failing to qualify for this year’s race.

Lowndes retired from full-time driving at the end of the 2018 season, but was quickly retained by Triple Eight as a co-driver for the 2019 enduros.

It was later confirmed Lowndes will reunite with Jamie Whincup for the year’s longest races, and the duo will run the team’s famous #888, the number Lowndes carried in six of his seven Bathurst wins.
