F1 news, Canadian Grand Prix 2019: Lewis Hamilton, Sebastian Vettel, penalty, retirement, video, watch

Published

on

Lewis Hamilton has described Sebastian Vettel as the driver he most enjoys racing against – and urged his great rival to “stick around” in Formula 1.

Hamilton and Vettel, far and away the grid’s two most successful drivers, were at the centre of another major controversy in Sunday’s Canadian GP when the Ferrari was handed a time penalty for forcing the Mercedes off the track as they battled for the lead.

The sanction dropped a livid Vettel behind Hamilton in the final classification and triggered some extraordinary post-race scenes from the Ferrari driver. But while Vettel expressed his anger with the decision, there was no animosity among the drivers: with Hamilton shepherding the German on to the top step of the podium with him, before Vettel stepped in to say the crowd should not boo the world champion.

Jamie Whincup admitted he and his team have been “confused” by their lack of speed this season.

Now two completed rounds behind championship leader Scott McLaughlin on the points table, Whincup is stuck in a winless drought unseen in his days with Triple Eight.

Shell V-Power Racing Fords share 15 of the season’s 18 race wins – 13 for McLaughlin, two for Fabian Coulthard – and have taken 12 poles.

F1 2019: Lewis Hamilton, Lando Norris, British Grand Prix, Silverstone, McLaren, Mercedes

IMPRESSIVE F1 rookie Lando Norris has urged Lewis Hamilton to “stick around” in the sport until McLaren are competing at the front again so that the two British drivers can race each other.

Norris and Hamilton are both enjoying superb seasons; the McLaren youngster has made a dazzling start to his career, while Hamilton is on course for a sixth world title and nearing Michael Schumacher’s records.

But although McLaren have made huge improvements in F1 2019, Norris believes he won’t be able to battle Hamilton wheel-to-wheel for at least another two years – and the world champion’s current contract at Mercedes expires at the end of next season.

SILVERSTONE was the scene of last weekend’s dramatic Formula 1 race, but memories at the venue are much more anxious for MotoGP.

A lack of drainage, coupled with the deterioration of asphalt laid in 2018, led to the cancellation of last year’s MotoGP race at Silverstone. Fans went home empty-handed as MotoGP said there was “no option” to rearrange the race on the Monday.

At the time, MotoGP race director Mike Webb blamed the then-new surface.
