Championship playoff final live Derby County v Aston Villa live score, updates, promotion, how to watch

Published

on

Aston Villa and Derby County face off tonight (12am Tuesday AEST) for Premier League promotion — and all the riches that come with it — in the Championship play-off final.

For Villa, it’s a second consecutive trip to the Wembley decider, having been beaten by Fulham last season, as they aim to return to the top flight for the first time since 2016.

Derby, meanwhile, have been away from the Premier League since their infamous 2007/08 campaign. There have been more near misses since than they would like to remember, and their last play-off final saw them beaten by QPR in 2014.

Sydney FC have rebounded from their disappointing FFA Cup exit at the hands of Robbie Fowler’s Brisbane Roar by overcoming a gritty NPL opponent in Wollongong Wolves on Wednesday night.

The Sky Blues’ English striker Adam le Fondre was at the heart of the 2-0 pre-season victory, scoring an absolute belter into the top corner before assisting the second goal just two minutes later.

Meanwhile Melbourne Victory took out a Victorian NPL opponent in a comfortable 4-0 victory as preparations ramp up for the upcoming A-League campaign.

Liverpool vs Chelsea, Super Cup: Frank Lampard, lessons learned, goals, highlights, video, Tammy Abraham, penalties, shootout

Published

on

The Super Cup, much like the Community Shield, is viewed in England as largely a meaningless exercise; a needless extra game to distract the squad from the primary focus of the Premier League so soon after it has started.

And an end-to-end Super Cup, which drains the legs physically and the mind mentally, is particularly unwelcome – although not for Frank Lampard and Chelsea.

By the time the game had finished at 1am in Istanbul, Lampard had learned so much more about his team than he had in the humbling 4-0 defeat to Manchester United on the weekend.

He made changes to the starting XI, bringing in the more experienced trio of Olivier Giroud, N’Golo Kante and Christian Pulisic, the latter for his full Chelsea debut, but still trusted in the youth of Tammy Abraham and Mason Mount off the bench.
